Who cares about whats on the floor if you are working on the desk?! Another thing that goes with keeping your working area clear is to keep nothing in your eyesight that might distract you. With me, for instance, if I see a guitar at my working area, even if its just in the corner of my eye, after a while Ill pick it up and play it. Its just hard to concentrate on something you dont like doing if you can see something youd like to do. The next trick is to write down what you have to do for homework on separate little notes. Also write down the time you started doing that piece of homework and the time you think youll be finished onto each note. After you are finished also write that time down. That will keep you going because youre racing against time, but after a while you just cant think anymore. So, after every 10 minuets open the window and walk around the room for 1 or 2 minutes, to let your brain cool down. After every half-an-hour take a 5 minuet break and leave the room if you want. Dont forget to come back after 5 minuets! I do think all this does help, but it takes a lot of discipline. Founded in 1983 by Robert Mathews, it was one of the first racists militia groups. It gathered it’s members from the National Alliance, Aryan Nation, and other Klan splinter groups. Mathews felt that it was his duty in life to lead a revolution against government and all non-white citizens of the U.S. During the first year of existence, the Order stole close to $26,000 in order to launch a counterfeiting operation. In total, the Order stole over four-million dollars from banks and armored trucks. Mathews and his followers were more than just thieves, they were also one of the first domestic terrorist groups. Members of the Order carried out strategic bombings and planned assassinations. Two people that were targeted were Walter West and Alan Berg. Walters was a members of the Order accused of â€Å"talking to much.† In May of 1994, Walters was driven into to the woods by other members of the Order who shot and buried him. If in individual does follow the rehabilitation programme then he/she will see that their life has more financial benefits, family life becomes better and they start seeing a difference within themselves mentally and physically. Rehab is a good strategy to help with overcoming communication issues. The former asserts that if determinism is true, then free will is nonexistent and humans are essentially robots following a path determined for us from our past and natural laws. James’ parents were alcoholics who drank freely in front of James when he was younger, thus in addition to contributing to his genetic predisposition; his parents provided an alcohol promoting environment. One night while drinking, James and Billy leave the bar extremely intoxicated. Neither is fit to drive, but James takes the wheel and is eventually involved in a fatal accident which kills his friend Billy. James falls into depression after Billy’s death, holds a gun to his head, and pulls the trigger. The important question is whether James acted freely? One can agree that James committed suicide of his own â€Å"free will† or choice but, from determinism one can say that James did not act freely. If we look back at Billy’s infinite causal time line, it becomes apparent that James did not act freely: He was the son of alcoholics and raised in an alcoholic environment, his grandfather was an alcoholic, and his ancestor from Columbus’ discovery, a Native American, became an alcoholic after the pilgrims introduced him to alcohol. Defining â€Å"free will† as one’s ability to choose is not in conflict with determinism. Determinism still prevails because, as with the example with James, one does not act freely due to their predetermined causes of his alcoholism. So far, I have attempted to show that free will, under the definition stated above, and determinism can coexist. Compatibilism provides a better account of free will compared to Hard Determinism because it shows that free will can exist and thus illustrates that Hard Determinism is currently incorrect because it does not account for free will. Libertarianism – Is Randomness and Answer? Whereas compatibilism rejects the second premise of the Hard Determinist argument, Libertarianism rejects the first premise – the idea that determinism exists insofar as it applies to human beings. There are three general libertarian responses that attempt to reject determinism: experience/introspection, accountability, and quantum theory. For the sake of this paper, I will cover what appears to be the most compelling response, quantum theory. â€Å"According to quantum mechanics, a cornerstone of present-day physics, the rules that govern the behavior of subatomic articles are irreducibly probabilistic. † For example, if one were to shoot a photon beam through an X-ray film according to quantum mechanics, at best, we can only determine the probability of a singular photon’s ability to penetrate the film, but not which particular photon makes it through . Quantum theory introduces randomness into the universe, but does the random motion of subatomic particles disprove determinism and allow us to drop the notion of determinism for every fiber of the universe? I don’t believe so. As Rachels would say, Randomness and freedom are completely different. My problem with quantum mechanics is that it does not rule out determinism. Take the following example; we launch a projectile within a vacuum (no air resistance). We know, from Newtonian Physics, the path the projectile will take, the velocity at the top of its flight, and the time of its flight. These variables are constantly tested and proven in physics labs, and the event is causally determined in the sense that we can trace gravity (the main effect on projectile motion) back to the formation of the universe and earth. Since we can determine projectile motion I do not see how from quantum mechanics, it follows that determinism does not exist. Responsibility under Compatibilism Determining whether we are responsible for an action depends on whether the action is deserves blame or praise. Free will is a necessary component of responsibility, if we assert that free will does not exists, as with the Hard Determinist argument, then responsibility would be pointless since one cannot choose an action. James Rachels provides an account of responsibility based on three conditions : 1. You must have done the act in question 2. The act must in some sense have been wrong 3. You must have no excuse having done the act. *Viable excuses: mistakes, accidents, coercion, ignorance and insanity. The opposite applies for praiseworthiness, but excuses are replaces with conditions analogous to excuses. So what does this mean for compatibilism? Since we do have free will according compatibilism, we are responsible for our actions so long as these actions are praiseworthy or blameworthy under the Rachels account of responsibility. With this paper, I hope that I have attempted to explain that hard determinism’s flaw is that it does not account for free will. Libertarianism’s popular response, quantum mechanics, fails to debunk obviously determined events (projectile in a vacuum). Thus leaving compatibilism, with the revised definition of free will, as the best account for free will.

Antigone Antigone The debate over who is the tragic hero in Antigone continue on to this day. The belief that Antigone is the hero is a strong one. There are many critics who believe, however, that Creon, the Ruler of Thebes, is the true protagonist. I have made my own judgments also, based on what I have researched of this work by Sophocles. Antigone is widely thought of as the tragic hero of the play bearing her name. She would seem to fit the part in light of the fact that she dies in doing what is right. She buries her brother without worrying what might happen to her. She "Takes into consideration death and the reality that may be beyond death" (Hathorn 59). Those who do believe that Antigone was meant to be the true tragic hero argue against others who believe that Creon deserves that honor. They say that the Gods were against Creon, and that he did not truly love his country. "His patriotism is to narrow and negative and his conception of justice is too exclusive... to be dignified by the name of love for the state" (Hathorn 59). These arguments, and many others, make many people believe the Antigone is the rightful protagonist. Many critics argue that Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone. They say that his noble quality is his caring for Antigone and Ismene when thier father was persecuted. Those who stand behind Creon also argue that Antigone never had a true epiphany, a key element in being a tragic hero. Creon, on the other hand, realized his mistake when Teiresias made his prophecy. He is forced to live, knowing that three people are dead because of his ignorance, which is a punishment worse than death. My opinion on this debate is that Antigone is the tragic hero. She tries to help her brother without worrying about what will happen to her. She says, "I intend to give my brother burial. I'll be glad to die in the attempt, -if it's a crime, then it's a crime that God commands" (Sophocles 4). She was also punished for doing what was right. Her epiphany came, hidden from the audience, before she hung herself. Creon's "nobleness" of taking in young Antigone and Ismene is overshadowed by his egotistical nature. He will not allow justice to come about simply because he wants to protect his image. He says, "If she gets away with this behavior, call me a woman and call her a man" (Sophocles 13). These elements prove that Antigone is the tragic hero. Creon, understanding his ignorance may lead one to believe that he is the true protagonist. But, if you define the word protagonist you would find that a protagonist is one who is a leader or supporter of a cause. Antigone is in support of her own actions in the burial of her brother Polyneices. She entrusts that she is doing what the Gods want, contrary to the belief of Creon. Many readers and critics may say Creon suffered greator hardships. Some may say Antigone never had an epiphany. Who would understand it if their own brother were left to the birds and dogs. There would be no rational thinking involved in a act like this. These are arguments envolved in deciding who is the tragic hero of Antigone. Critics, to this day, still argue about who is the tragic hero of Antigone. Many say that Antigone is the heroin. Others say that it is Creon. My research favors Antigone as the perfect protagonist. No matter who the reader sides with, it is agreed by most that there is a valid argument either way, in light of the fact that they both endure great hardships.
