Alcoholism Is A Serious Mental Disease - 1806 Words

Close to 80% of people over the age of 15 use alcohol as a choice (Macleans 58). This percent of people is outrageous if it is applied to the population of the world. Alcoholism is the pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol, and continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems among loved ones (â€Å"Alcoholism†). Alcohol is a dangerous thing if it is put into the wrong hands. People do not realize just how harsh alcohol can be on someone and their loved ones. Alcoholism is a disease that affects 2.3 million people that can be prevented if certain symptoms are noticed right away, but also has very negative long-term results and is very hard to cure unless the person is willing to†¦show more content†¦For many years people can just have a couple drinks a night, but when they become tolerant to that one drink may turn into four or five drinks just so they can get the same effect. Memory disorders, poor nu trition, liver disease, anemia, problems with the pancreas and low blood sugar among many others are causes of alcoholism (Helwig 115). This is why people need to get regular check ups to make sure everything is fine. If something is wrong it may be beneficial for the family members to think of why their loved one may have liver disease or another disease and if they have been drinking quite heavy for a while. Although causes can be important, being able to recognize symptoms and learning how to prevent alcohol abuse is much greater than dealing with it. Above all being able to prevent alcohol abuse is countless to having to live with it or be around it. Being unable to meet expectations at home and work, not being able to limit drinking are all signs that someone may be falling to alcohol and becoming an alcoholic (â€Å"Alcoholism†). There is most likely a cause to not being able to meet all requirements, but if someone is not willing to go talk to someone and try to resolv e their internal conflicts they may turn to a more harsh â€Å"treatment†. Being around a loved one that drinks a lot is something many people encounter but no one wants to admit that their loved one is an alcoholic, if they drink alone, drink with intention of getting drunk or drinks early in
